Did you hear the story about Paddy’s donkey?
Well, Paddy bought a donkey from a farmer for €100. The farmer agreed that he would deliver the donkey to Paddy the following day.
In the morning, the farmer arrived at Paddy’s place and told him, “Sorry Paddy, but I have some bad news. That donkey you bought, it died”.
Paddy replied to the farmer, “Well then, you had better just give me my money back”.
The farmer said, “I can’t do that Paddy. I’ve already spent it”.
Paddy replied, “Ok then, just bring me the dead donkey”.
The farmer, with a puzzled look, asked him, “What are you going to do with a dead donkey?”
Paddy answered, “I’m going to raffle him off”.
The farmer, surprised by this response, said, “You can’t raffle a dead donkey”.
Paddy replied, “Sure I can. Watch me. I just won’t tell anybody he’s dead”.
Well sure enough, a month later, the farmer met up with Paddy and asked, “What happened with the dead donkey?”
Paddy told him, “I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at €2 each and made a profit of €898”.
The farmer said, “€898! Didn’t anyone complain when they found out that the donkey was dead?”
Paddy said, “To be sure, just the guy who won. So I gave him his €2 back”.
Paddy is now working as a financial advisor for the Bank of Ireland.
