Right before Murphy was due to stand up in court on a burglary trial, the judge gave the defendant two options.
“Mr. Murphy”, the judge said, “since you claim that you are innocent of this crime, you can either let me try your case, or you can choose to have a jury of your peers”.
Murphy thought for a moment, then asked the judge, “Excusr me M’Lord, what are peers?”
Angered by his lack of understanding, the judge replied back in a loud voice, “They are people just like you Mr. Murphy. Your equals”.
“What the heck are you thinking?” Murphy snapped back at the judge. “I don’t want to be tried by a bunch of darn thieves!”
